What to Do When You Overdo It: How to Sober Up

Cannabis can be a wonderful tool for relaxation, creativity, and relief, but the uncomfortable feeling of consuming too much THC can quickly arise.

With cannabis consumption, everyone’s experience is unique. Factors like tolerance, body chemistry, environment, and chosen consumption method all play a role in how THC affects you. That’s why it’s crucial for responsible consumers to know their limits and understand what to do if they’ve overdone it.

This guide explores the general effects of THC, what happens when you consume too much, and practical tips to “sober up” and help regulate your high if you ever find yourself feeling overwhelmed.

General Effects of THC

THC, the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, interacts with your body’s endocannabinoid system to influence mood, perception, and physical sensations. When this cannabinoid binds to CB1 & CB2 receptors throughout the brain and body, effects are induced, but this response varies from person to person. Some common effects of THC include:

  • Relaxation and stress relief
  • Enhanced creativity and focus
  • Better sleep
  • Relief from pain, nausea, or anxiety

The way you consume THC also shapes your experience:

  • Inhalation (smoking or vaping): Fast-acting, often within minutes.
  • Edibles: Stronger and longer-lasting, but slower to kick in (can take 30–90 minutes).
  • Tinctures & beverages: Flexible dosing with faster onset of effects.
  • Topicals: Non-intoxicating, localized relief.

It’s also important to note that cannabis is considered biphasic, which means small doses can feel uplifting or therapeutic, while higher doses may cause drowsiness or unwanted effects. You have to find your sweet spot.

That’s why the golden rule with THC consumption is to “start low and go slow,” especially with edibles.

Can You Overdose on THC?

Unlike alcohol or opioids, cannabis does not shut down your respiratory system, which makes a fatal overdose nearly impossible.

Although fatal incidents from solely too much THC are very rare, consuming too much can still cause a cannabis overdose. This is sometimes called “greening out.” Even though greening out is not highly dangerous in the long term, it can be very uncomfortable in the moment.

Even experienced consumers occasionally misjudge their dose. Potent cultivars or edibles can all surprise your system and cause a sense of deregulation.

That’s why recognizing the signs of overconsumption is key to staying safe and informed.

Symptoms of Cannabis Overdose

If you’ve consumed too much THC, you may notice temporary effects such as:

  • Extreme fatigue or sleepiness – common with higher edible doses.
  • Paranoia or heightened anxiety – THC can intensify anxious thoughts or worries.
  • Increased heart rate – this sometimes occurs, especially for new consumers.
  • Dizziness or low blood pressure – may feel like lightheadedness or dizziness.
  • Disorientation – difficulty concentrating, confusion, or a sensory overload.

Remember: these feelings will pass! These effects are temporary and will fade in time.

What to Do If You’ve Consumed Too Much Cannabis

If you ever find yourself uncomfortably high from too much cannabis, here are some ways to help bring balance back:

  • Stay calm – Remind yourself that THC effects are temporary and will pass.
  • Try CBD – This nonpsychoactive cannabinoid won’t give a high effect but can help counteract the intensity of THC and bring you into a more balanced state.
  • Chew on black pepper – The terpene beta-caryophyllene in peppercorns is known to ease and counteract THC’s psychoactive effects.
  • Hydrate and snack – Drinking water and having something light to eat can help ground you.
  • Shift your environment – Remember about your set and setting. Play music, watch your favorite show, or take a walk outside. Changing your focus can ease overwhelming feelings.

If all else fails, find a safe, comfortable place to close your eyes, focus on taking deep breaths, and relax.

Responsible Consumption & Tolerance

The best way to prevent overconsumption of THC is to practice responsible and mindful use:

  • Start small – Especially with edibles, wait at least 90 minutes or when you feel effects before considering more.
  • Know your products – Pay attention to THC percentages and serving sizes with edibles.
  • Take tolerance breaks – Depending on how frequently you consume, giving your body a reset from time to time can help you maintain a more enjoyable relationship with the plant.
